Out and About in St. Lucia

Saint Lucia has numerable excursions available for those who want to get out and enjoy the beauty and culture of our island, but if you feel that a ‘do it yourself’ driving exploration may be just a bit too much adventure.

You can either hire a taxi for a personalized trip or join one of the many professionally operated tours available, from gentle bus tours to moderate hikes to soft adventures

Castries is the capital of St. Lucia, unfortunately, little of the historical architecture survive the numerous fires suffered through its history but there are still many interesting sites to see like the Cathedral, Great Duty Free and local shopping and the central market particularly on a Saturday morning.

Marigot Bay is the most beautiful bay in the Caribbean, providing a safe anchorage for yachts. For years the haunt of pirates, scenes of famous battles and during World War II a German U Boat surface in the bay. Also Film makers use the bay as a perfect location for filming movie scenes. In recent years the bay has become a well-know holiday destination.

Soufriere is known as St. Lucia’s spiritual heart, as the road twist and drops away, the volcanic cones Gros and Petit Piton dominates the horizon, declared a World Heritage Site, it’s also the site for the world’s only drive in volcano along with natural water falls and beautiful botanical gardens. It was once St. Lucia’s capital when the island was under French control.

Pigeon Island National Park is the perfect spot for a relaxing, educational and enjoyable half day; it was an island up to 1970. In the park the green lawn is surrounded by old military ruins. A walk up to Fort Rodney is a must. Atop the fort a fantastic view of Martinique to the north unfolds and in the other direction the mountainous terrain of St. Lucia. The trek up Signal Hill is slightly more difficult but the view is even more rewarding. It was from this spot admiral Rodney himself often perched to keep an eye on French movement. After the climb stops at either restaurant is in order or take a dip in the calm Caribbean Sea.
